Sara Swauger
Bull City ArtPlay Owner, Creative Director, and Teacher
I have always loved art and working with young children. My background includes a bachelors' degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood education and over a decade of teaching experience in public school kindergarten, and both private and non-profit preschools, as well as, three years on the Board of Directors for a local preschool. My passion is working with young children but traditional teaching settings struggled to give the space and time I craved for in depth, messy, and meaningful art experiences. I've been dreaming of Bull City ArtPlay for years; testing out projects with my own children, perfecting them with my kindergarten and preschool classes, running weekly art clubs at my children's public school, and hosting mini art based summer camps in my backyard.
My goal at Bull City ArtPlay is to provide every child with tactile, messy, authentic art making where the child is in full control, with freedom to experiment with and deeply experience both art and play. I want the studio to be a space for children but one that also feels comfortable for adults; a space that parents can connect and find their village while their children engage in art and play.

I am a mom to a 9 year old daughter, Adalyn, and 7 year old daughter, Rowan. I enjoy spending my free time hiking around the Eno River or hanging out on our back deck with my girls and husband, Peter. Creating art and reading books while relaxing in my hammock are two of my favorite ways to pass time. We love Durham and live near downtown with our two dogs, Izzy and Sophie, and two guinea pigs, Lulu and Coco.
